We recently completed a full lift modernisation at a residential block in Liverpool. The lift was already on our maintenance portfolio, so we knew it well. Here’s what we found, what we replaced and how it turned out.

The challenge

The existing equipment was aged and causing multiple breakdowns. For residents, that meant a lift they couldn’t rely on. For the building’s managers, it meant repeat callouts and complaints.

Parts for older control systems also get harder to find over time, so repairs take longer and cost more. At that point, patching the old equipment stops making sense. Our post on whether to modernise or replace an ageing lift explains how to make that call.

Our approach

Because the lift was already on our portfolio, our project team spotted the problem early. They surveyed the lift, priced the work and sent the proposal over quickly, so the client could make a decision without a long wait.

The plan was to keep the parts of the lift that were still sound and replace everything that was causing problems. That included swapping the old Schindler controls for a modern Lester control panel.

What we replaced

Motor room
  • ✓New Lester control panel, compliant to EN81-2
  • ✓New safety signage throughout
  • ✓New tool board
  • ✓Remote monitoring
Lift shaft
  • ✓Complete rewire of all new lift components
  • ✓New shaft information system and encoder
  • ✓New compliant emergency pit stop switch
  • ✓Full shaft clean down
  • ✓New main suspension ropes
  • ✓New multipoint stations for two-way communication
Landings
  • ✓Floor protection in place during the works
  • ✓All landing fixtures replaced, surface mounted
  • ✓Single-button call stations with a sounder when a call registers
  • ✓Surface-mounted landing indicators
Lift car
  • ✓New car operating panel with logo, LCD display, voice announcements and alarm
  • ✓All floor buttons, door open/close and key switches
  • ✓New car top controls for inspections
  • ✓New floor signalling switches on the car top
  • ✓New car door controller, doors and track
  • ✓New car ceiling and roof for safe access and working

The result

The project ran smoothly from start to finish. The building now has a more modern, compliant and efficient lift, and the client was pleased with the result.

The work has led straight to a second project.
We’re now starting on another lift in the block next door.
