School Lifts

For some pupils and staff, the lift is the only way to their lessons. When it breaks down, timetables get rearranged, classes move rooms, and the pupils who rely on it most are the ones left out.

We maintain, repair and install school lifts and college lifts across the North West and Yorkshire, for clients including Hugh Baird College. Every engineer on our team has Full Disclosure clearance, and we’re on call 24/7 if a lift fails during term.

Lifts and Your Accessibility Duties

Under the Equality Act 2010, schools are expected to plan how they’ll improve access for disabled pupils over time, and colleges and universities must make reasonable adjustments for disabled students. In a multi-storey building, a lift that works every day is a big part of meeting those duties, and a lift that’s often out of service can undo a lot of good planning.

Lifts and Fire Evacuation

Unless a lift has been designed and installed as an evacuation lift, it shouldn’t be used in a fire. That means pupils and staff who rely on the lift need a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) setting out how they’ll get out safely. When you’re planning a new lift or a major refurbishment, it’s worth thinking about evacuation at the same time, and we can talk it through with you and your fire risk assessor.

School and College Lifts We Work On

  • Passenger Lifts:

The main lifts in multi-storey teaching blocks. They take the heaviest use at lesson changeovers, so reliability matters more than speed.

  • Platform Lifts:

Step-free access in smaller and older school buildings, between split levels and onto stages, where a full lift shaft isn't practical.

  • Service and Goods Lifts:

Move equipment, books and catering supplies between floors.

  • Dumbwaiters:

Take food and drink between kitchens and dining areas on different floors.

Working Around Term Times

Routine servicing is booked at times that cause the least disruption to lessons. Bigger jobs such as refurbishments and new lift installations can be planned for half terms and the summer holidays where that suits you, so the lift is back in service before pupils return.

Our engineers follow your site and safeguarding rules, and every member of the team has Full Disclosure clearance.

Our Lift Services for Schools and Colleges

Our maintenance contracts cover servicing, usually every three months, and LOLER examinations every six months, with priority call-outs during term. We can look after a single platform lift, a whole campus or lifts across several schools in a trust, and plan refurbishment or new installations for the holidays.

School and College Lift FAQs

How often should a school lift be serviced?

Most are serviced every three months. Any lift that carries people also needs a LOLER thorough examination every six months.

Can you do bigger jobs in the school holidays?

Yes. Refurbishments and installations can be planned for half terms and the summer holidays where that suits you.

Can pupils use the lift in a fire?

Not unless it’s a designated evacuation lift. Pupils and staff who rely on the lift should have a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan.

How are your engineers vetted?

Every member of our team has Full Disclosure clearance, and our engineers follow your site and safeguarding rules.
