Retail Lifts

In a shop, a lift that’s out of order costs sales. Customers who can’t easily get upstairs don’t see what’s there, and when the stockroom lift stops, staff end up carrying deliveries up the stairs.

We maintain, repair and install shop lifts across the North West and Yorkshire, for retailers including Hotel Chocolat. From our offices in St Helens, Manchester and Leeds, our engineers cover stores across the region and are on call 24/7.

Customer Lifts and Stockroom Lifts

Most multi-floor shops have two kinds of lift, and both matter.

Customer lifts keep every floor open to everyone, including parents with buggies, older shoppers and wheelchair users. Under the Equality Act 2010, shops are expected to make reasonable adjustments so disabled customers can use their services, and for a store with more than one sales floor, a working lift is usually essential. Customers also judge the store by it, so it needs to look the part as well as work.

Stockroom lifts move deliveries from the back door to the shop floor or upstairs stockroom. When one stops, shelves go empty and staff are left carrying heavy boxes on the stairs, which is exactly the kind of manual handling a goods lift is there to prevent.

Shop Lifts We Work On

  • Passenger Lifts:

The main customer lifts in multi-floor stores. We keep them reliable through busy trading periods and levelling accurately at every floor.

  • Platform Lifts:

Step-free access to upper floors in smaller and older shops where a full lift shaft won't fit.

  • Glass Lifts:

Feature lifts in larger stores and shopping centres. We install, maintain and repair them.

  • Goods Lifts:

Move deliveries and stock between floors without customers ever seeing them. Goods-only lifts need a LOLER examination every twelve months.

  • Dumbwaiters:

Small service lifts for lighter stock, paperwork, or food and drink in in-store cafés.

Working Around Your Trading Hours

The shop floor can’t close for lift work, so we plan around your trade. We agree visit times with your store or facilities manager, avoid your busiest periods where we can, and tell you in advance how long the lift will be off. We can also look at servicing stockroom lifts before opening or after deliveries.

Our engineers are friendly with customers and staff and work tidily. As one store told us, John came to service the lift and was kind, friendly and very efficient.

Refreshing a Tired Customer Lift

A scruffy lift car lets down an otherwise well-kept store. A lift refurbishment can replace the walls, flooring, lighting and buttons, usually in one to three days, and a full overhaul of the controls, doors and drive usually takes one to three weeks, which we can plan around quieter trading periods.

Our Lift Services for Shops

Most shop lifts are serviced every three months under a maintenance contract, with LOLER examinations on schedule and priority repairs if a lift fails during trading. We can look after a single shop or lifts across several stores.

Shop and Retail Lift FAQs

How often should a shop lift be serviced?

Most are serviced every three months. Customer lifts need a LOLER thorough examination every six months, and goods-only lifts every twelve months.

Can you service our lifts outside trading hours?

We agree visit times with your store team and avoid your busiest periods. We can also look at servicing stockroom lifts before opening or after deliveries.

Do we need a lift for disabled customers?

Under the Equality Act 2010, shops are expected to make reasonable adjustments so disabled people can use their services. What’s reasonable depends on your building, but for many stores with more than one sales floor, a passenger or platform lift is part of it.

Can you make our lift look newer without replacing it?

Yes. A cosmetic refurbishment of the walls, flooring, lighting and buttons usually takes one to three days.

What happens if a customer is trapped?

Call us on 01744 555006 at any time and tell us someone is trapped. We’re on call 24/7, and contract customers are seen first.
