Chester Zoo – Case Study

I went on a site visit to one of our clients, with our Service Supervisor, Tony. We visited the Aurora passenger lift and the goods lift to carry out the services.

Whilst on site I had to wear a hi-vis and a contractor’s ID lanyard. By attending a site visit I now have a better understanding of what the engineers do on services. I learnt that there are 5 main areas of a lift that engineers check on service, these are:

  • the motor room
  • the lift car
  • the top of the lift car
  • the pit area
  • the lift shaft

I also learnt about the safety measures the engineers take when carrying out a service, these include:

  • putting out-of-order tape on all landing pushes
  • using a landing barrier
  • using pit ladders when the lift has a deep pit
  • using a pit prop when necessary

My job is a non-customer-facing role, meaning I speak with customers via email and phone calls. I was able to meet one of our customers in person on this site visit, which was nice because I was able to put a face to a name and build rapport with a customer in person.
